LOOKING TO BECOME A HOIST OPERATOR? HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Effectively an outdoor elevator, a personnel and materials hoist is used to carry materials and workers between floors of multi- story buildings when under construction.

The hoist is comprised of a lift car or platform, some machinery and a mast structure tied off to the building and is installed or extended by riggers or scaffolders at the beginning of a project.

It is important that operators know how to operate it safely.

PLANNING THE WORK

The first step involved in the role of hoist operator is identifying any potential hazards in order to control or prevent them.

Methods of communication are then chosen. These may include bells, two way radios etc.

Also important to the planning process is knowing the hoist-safe working load (SWL) appropriate for the project and the weights and sizes of any loads to be moved.

CONDUCTING ROUTINE PRE-OPERATIONAL CHECKS AT THE START OF WORK

This involves inspecting the hoist for any damage or maintenance requirements and reporting any problems. The hoist service logbook should be checked for compliance. Then the hoist’s main power supply can be switched on before then checking that all controls, lights, alarm systems, safety devices and communication equipment are in working order.

OPERATING THE HOIST THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Correct operation of the hoist according to the set procedures is vital. Load weights distribution should be monitored keenly and safety must be maintained at all times. Wind and weather conditions are monitored throughout the day and the hoist is shut down should the conditions be deemed too dangerous.

SHUTTING DOWN AND SECURING THE HOIST AT THE END OF THE DAY

The hoist should be lowered to the ground level and powered off. The hoist is then checked for any signs of damage. If found they must be reported. Next, all gates and fences must be secured from unauthorized access.

All of this can be learned at personnel and materials hoist training. This training is intensive and therefore requires upmost concentration and focus.
