HOW TO BECOME A TRAFFIC CONTROLLER

Becoming a qualified Traffic Controller opens the door to a new career working in a variety of fields such as construction, building, mining and more.

Ensuring the safety of workers and road users can be rewarding. In addition to this, is the possibility to always be working in different locations and enjoying working outdoors.

To work as an authorised traffic controller, one must first gain various qualifications.

WHAT DOES A TRAFFIC CONTROLLER DO?

A Traffic Controller directs the flow of vehicles, machinery and other road users. Tasks and responsibilities include;

  • Setting up traffic management signs and devices
  • Directing traffic and road users
  • Applying and monitoring safety and traffic management plans
  • Inspecting and cleaning signs equipment

When working as a Traffic Controller, you also need to follow specific standards in regards to dress and personal protective equipment (PPE.) These are likely to include hard hats, safety glasses, hi-visibility clothing and steel capped boots

The role is a serious responsibility. It is a Traffic Controller’s primary objective to ensure one’s safety, the safety of other workers and the safety of all road users.

In addition to this, it is also the responsibility of a Traffic Controller to minimise the impact of the project on road users and road network.

Depending on the project, a Traffic Controller may work shifts ranging from 8-12 hours.

It is also important to consider that the job does include physical requirements, including lifting heavy objects and standing for long periods of time.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A TRAFFIC CONTROLLER?

To become a traffic controller, you need to obtain a White Card and complete the traffic management training course. You must be at least 18 years of age and hold a driver’s license.
